As we gather on Candlemas Sunday, the Feast of the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple, and a pause in our weekly Epiphany journey, to remember Jesus’ mission as redeemer and light for the world. Not without sacrifice, but with community to help along the way.
Our invitation into worship reminds us that through wisdom from the past we find Jesus anew in our worship, which allows us to draw closer to God and be redeemed. Our Hebrew scripture from Malachi describes the refining of God’s people, something worthwhile, which has been dragged down by unimportant things. The Psalmist’s refrain tells us to trust in God’s dwelling place and that God’s will defend those who believe and trust in God. The letter to the Hebrews reminds us that Jesus was tempted like we are, thus we can trust that Jesus, and God, won’t abandon us. Our Gospel Simeon and Anna meeting Jesus as he was presented in the Temple 40 days after his birth – to be redeemed for God.
Points worth considering, we are important to God, otherwise God wouldn’t do something to remove the distractions and things which hamper us. Our ritual is not the end of our faith, rather it is a reminder that people in community with God have hope because God’s purposes are not man’s. We also need to remember that new things help us see God a little clearer and with a little deeper passion. Our community, standing alongside us, is here to help us survive and thrive.
Who is the one who we can offer hope to and from whom we draw hope? I invite your comments,
Les+
