Today is the end of the liturgical year and we celebrate the last Sunday after Pentecost – Christ the King Sunday and a celebration of the promise found Christ’s kingship in our lives Gathering in worship on the Sunday after Election Day and addressing, in community, a way to refocus on the foundational mission of followers of Christ and the Church.
We offered a prayer that reminds us, that Jesus is the King with true power who unifies creation under God and saves us from sin. Our Hebrew scripture reading was a passage from second Samuel which recounts the last words of David and his declaration of God in charge of his life and favor he was shown by God, flaws and all. Our Psalmist sings the longest of the Song of Ascents that was offered by pilgrims entering Jerusalem. Our Epistle was a passage from the prologue to the Revelation to John and offers hope and grace under oppression by the earthly powers. Our Gospel from John is Jesus’ trial before Pilate and his answering about his kingship – a realm which is not of this world. As we celebrate Christ the King, we are reminded that we need to share God’s and Christ’s story to the world and to offer hope that the powers of this world will not have the last say. Our assurance is, no matter our flaws, we are always invited to share our faith because God’s love wins – if we but love God, our neighbor, and look for God’s ongoing guidance in our lives. Who will we lead and be led forward with in Christ?
