Maundy Thursday Sermon

St Mark's Medford, Episcopal, Rev Les Ferguson, Lent

Maundy Thursday and the beginning of the Triduum, the three days between Maundy Thursday and Easter. The day where we are reminded of our connection to the Passover of the Jews in Egypt and Jesus being servant on top of being Savior by washing the disciple’s feet.

Our invitation into worship was a prayer and reminder that Jesus gave us the Eucharist as a reminder that all are worthy of the grace of God, only by remembering the life and ministry of Jesus. Our Hebrew scripture from Exodus is the institution of the Passover feast before the tenth plague and how that meal is the sign of God’s grace to the Israelites. The Psalmist’s refrain gives thanks to God because God chose to listen to and hear the pleas of God’s people. The reading from Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians is Paul’s account of the first Eucharist. Our Gospel was from John’s Gospel and depicts Jesus as Savior and Servant of all, and the command to the disciples to do likewise.

Maundy Thursday is our connection to God of Creation and God who led the Jews from oppression in Egypt. Our recollection of that day and the call by Jesus to serve and he served continues to connect us to God and all humanity. We are reminded that our simple actions remind us of the deeper meaning of our profession of faith. How do we tell the story of deliverance when the world doesn’t offer deliverance from oppression? We remember the promises given in creation and share the truth which transcends our understanding and human self-centeredness. Who do you need to share that message with today and forever?

I invite your comments,
Les+
