Twenty-fifth Sunday after Pentecost Sermon
November 10, 2024, 1:34 PM

Gathering in worship on the Sunday after Election Day and addressing, in community, a way to refocus on the foundational mission of followers of Christ and the Church.

We offered a prayer that sets before us, the function of Jesus in our world – to destroy the works of those who oppose God and to help us focus on our mission of bearing God’s light to the world. Our Hebrew scripture reading was a passage from Ruth where Naomi finds a husband for Ruth in Boaz and how Ruth helps provide for Naomi so she will have a future and a heritage. Our Psalmist sings the song that reminds that when God builds a house, there will be success and growth, but without paying attention to God there will be failure. Our Epistle was a passage from Hebrews which reminds us that Christ paid everything for our salvation on the day he offered himself, and that when we follow Jesus, we have the assurance that our work focuses on change and hope, not on survival. Our Gospel from Mark is two stories: the scribe who makes a big offering and the widow who gives everything. The gospel was the foundation of today’s sermon which focused on the questions, “If not me, then who? If not now, then when?” The principle of the Gospel is our job as Christians is to bear witness to God’s love and being light to the nations – a job that never changes because that’s what Jesus shows us to do. Who is the one who needs our light today and forever?
