Eighth Sunday after Pentecost Sermon
July 14, 2024, 4:03 PM

“Sometimes chaos reigns in our lives…” We worshipped on the 8th Sunday after Pentecost offering a prayer that we can faithfully use the grace and power we’ve been given for God’s greater glory. Our lesson from second Samuel recounts the friction between David and Michal when David dances and gives thanks as the Ark of the Covenant proceeds into Jerusalem. The Psalmist offered a song which serves as a reminder that no one or nothing can stand forever against God’s power. Our Epistle from the letter to the Ephesians invites us to remember our sins have been forgiven by Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection. And the benefit we receive is the necessity to share God’s story of salvation and grace. The gospel from Mark which describes the depravity and chaos of life as Herod beheads John the Baptist. Mark’s gospel also tells the simple story of faith and dedication shown by John’s followers. In these apparently chaotic and disordered readings we are invited to remember that our job is to be faithful in the here and now, to be ones who connect with people, not for personal gain but to give them (and us) hope that God will continue to give us hope and assurance of our future. Remember, "if you do nothing, nothing gets done..." What simple acts of faith can you share to build a community fixed and founded on mutual love and respect?

I invite your comments,
Les+
